East Cork Athletic Club was founded in November of 1985 in an effort to amalgamate the constituent senior clubs within the East Cork Athletic Board region. The first chairman was Fr. Liam O’Brien from Sacred Heart College, Carrignavar and the founding secretary was Paul Mulholland from Midleton AC.

The club is affiliated to the Athletic Association of Ireland (AAI) and caters for adult athletes with a view to participating at interclub competition in cross-country, track and field and road.

Since its foundation in the mid 1980s the club has established itself as one of the major forces in middle distance running in the Munster region. Since that time the club has won more senior men’s team titles at County and Munster level than any other club.

In the mid 1980s and early 1990s the club also performed successfully at track and field level. The National Track and Field Division ‘B’ league was won in 1987 and for a number of years thereafter the club was able to hold its own in the ‘A’ Division.

The Men’s National Inter Club road relay title was won in 1991 and 1997.

In 1991 the men’s team came 3rd at the National Senior Cross Country Championships. Along with two 2nd place finishes at the National Senior Intermediate Cross Country Championships in 1991 and 2004 these remain our more significant team performance at national level.
