Well done to the members of the successful Masters Team that captured the Munster title in Fethard , Co. Tipperary on Sunday 29th November. Donnacha O’Mahoney was just pipped for the individual gold by Trevor Woods of St. Finbarrs. Trevor also had the better of Donnacha in the County Masters but on this occasion the margin of victory was much smaller with the result still in doubt with 50m remaining. The other members of the team were Eric Meade 9th, Roy Fahy 11th and George Murray 14th.
Other news.........
Congratulations to John Walshe who was recently awarded the Cork City Sports Athletics award for the month of October. The report below is courtesy of the Athletics Ireland website.
It is surely safe to say that John ‘Mr. Ballycotton’ Walshe is as worthy a winner as any of the great athletes who have been honoured at this event in the past.
Speaking at the lunch reception in Jurys, Evening Echo Sports Editor John McHale told the gathering that in all his years as Editor he had not come across a more humble and obliging person as John Walshe.
John Walshe has been organising road races in and around his beloved Ballycotton for decades. As a race organiser he is regarded by everyone as an athletes man and no step is left unturned by him in his efforts to ensure that everything possible is done to make their racing experience the best ever.
John is probably best known throughout the length and breadth of Ireland as the organiser of the famous Ballycotton 10, a race that was there long before the running boom began, and a race that has grown in stature year after year, so much so that there are now entry limits, and that limit is reached within hours of the entry forms becoming available.
Evening Echo Editor John McHale was glowing in his address about John Walshe, as was Cork City Sports Chairman Dick Hodgins.
In reply John Walshe said he was honoured and humbled to be the recipient of this prestigious award, following in the footsteps of Derval O’Rourke in September and Olive Loughnane in August. He thanked everyone for the award as well as his family and friends who had supported him so well over the past 30 years.

National Inter Counties
Well done to James McCarthy and Frank O’Carroll who competed in the National Inter Counties cross country championships in Kilbeggan, Co. Westmeath on Sunday.
James had a fine run finishing in 23rd position and was 2nd Cork man home, helping the county to 4th place. Frank, who was running in his first National Senior cross country event had a solid race and will no doubt benefit further from the experience.
County Intermediate and Masters Championships (November 15th, Bandon)
The club went to Bandon in the hope of retaining the Masters title and also for the first time in a number of years also fielded an Intermediate team. On a hilly and occasionally very muddy course the Masters team were once again victorious being led home by Donnacha O’Mahony who was 2nd overall with Eric Meade and Roy Fahy and a resurgent Tom Hartnett completing the team.
The Intermediate team also fared well, finishing 2nd. Kevin O’Brien was 3rd overall and the rest of the team consisted of Joe Fitzgerald, Conor Tierney and David O’Dwyer.
November 2nd 2009
The Cork Senior Cross Country Championships were held yesterday 1st November at the Showgrounds in Clonakilty. In what can be best described as traditional conditions East Cork AC was successful in retaining the team title for a seventh year in succession. The course was challenging as expected for such a race, with a number of gradual climbs over the 2,000m lap, 5 of which had to be completed.
After some torrential rainfall all week and in particular the previous night the course was very heavy in patches and in one section in particular it was required to cross a small stream which had turned into somewhat more than a small stream by the end of proceedings.
Sean McGrath, who was third in last years race finished a strong second to Mark Hanrahan of Leevale who also won the individual title last year. James McCarthy was our 2nd man home in 3rd place with Donnacha O’Mahoney(7th) and Diarmuid Collins (8th) completing the ream. Donnacha has now achieved a remarkable feat of winning a total of 15 team titles and by the evidence of today’s performance he’s not finished yet.
Other members of the club who competed today were Frank O’Carroll(11th) ,Kevin O’Brien(20th), Eric Meade(22nd), Roy Fahy(23rd), Denis McCarthy(30th) and David O’Dwyer(31st).
Also well done to George Murray who clocked a time of 2hrs 58mins 44secs in the New York Marathon yesterday.

July 27th 2009
East Cork AC were well represented at the Munster Masters Track & Field Championships held in Castleisland on Sunday 26th July. The 3,000m was the main focus for all concerned. George Murray and David O'Dwyer shared the lead from the gun for the first couple of laps but as the pace increased Frank Hayes, Eric Meade and Donnacha O'Mahoney made their presence felt at the business end of things. John Lenihan from the host club An Riochct was also in the mix. As the race unfolded it became a two horse race with Frank Hayes pulling away from George Murray in the closing stages. Pre race favourite Donnacha O'Mahoney who was suffering from a calf injury faded badly and was caught by the fast finishing Denis McCarthy on the last lap. The full set of results including category medalists will be available on the Munster Athletics website.

Congratulations to James McCarthy who chalked up an impressive victory in the Irish Milers Club 800m at the Cork City Sports. James ran an impressive final 200m to clock a PB of 1.58.72. One Senior club member believes that this is the first victory by an East Cork AC athlete at the City Sports but this could yet be disputed........
Sean McGrath also competed at the Mardyke on Saturday in the 3,000m, clocking a time of 9.03.43. Sean made an aggressive start but paid for the early pace and did not perform to the high standards that he has set himself this season.
All club members are reminded that this coming Thursday(9th July) is the clubs annual 5 mile road race in Whitegate. Any club member who is not running is asked to make themselves available to assist in the organising and stewarding on the night.

Sean came home in an impressive 13th position and James finished in 31st place. Sean and James have been winning races from eachother in the past few months, James seemed to have the upper hand towards the end of '08 but Sean seems to have come into top form at just the right time and has come out on top in the last couple of encounters. |
